Editor’s Note
Welcome to The Gowanaut.
Something is happening in Gowanus.
If you've walked along the canal lately, you already know. Cranes on every block. New buildings are going up where warehouses used to be. New restaurants and coffee shops filling the ground floors. A neighborhood that spent decades as Brooklyn's industrial backyard is turning into something else entirely — and it's moving fast.
The Gowanaut is here to help you keep up.
Every Saturday morning, we'll send you one short newsletter covering the things that matter to the people who live here: what's opening, what's closing, what's under construction, and what's worth doing this weekend. We cover Gowanus and the surrounding neighborhoods — Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Park Slope — with a focus on the streets you actually walk.
Here's what we cover:
Restaurants, bars, and shops. New openings, closings, and the spots you should know about before you head out.
Development and construction. What's going up, who's building it, and when it's supposed to be done. We track the buildings so you don't have to wonder what's behind the scaffolding.
Events and arts. What's worth checking out on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon — live music, comedy, gallery openings, and everything in between.
The local stuff. That boutique on the side street that has been here for years. A restaurant so good it’s been in this neighborhood since before the pandemic. Bridge updates, canal cleanup progress, neighborhood history, and the stories that don't fit neatly into a category but matter to the people who live here.
Here's what we don't cover: politics, crime blotters, and NYC news that has nothing to do with Gowanus. There are plenty of places for that. This isn't one of them.
Our first full issue drops this Saturday. We'll have the latest on restaurant openings headed to the neighborhood, development deals reshaping the canal corridor, and what's happening at Gowanus venues this weekend.
If that sounds useful, you're in the right place. Subscribe, and we'll see you Saturday.
